The owner of this 2020 model 200 Series was looking for improved power and torque, along with enhanced driveability. So we recently carried out a custom dyno tune to it, and fitted one of our Trans Packs, which is a transmission ECU remap plus the fitment of a transmission lock-up kit.
This vehicle is regularly used for touring and towing around 3 tonnes, daily driving and taking on beach adventures. The owner had also made several upgrades, including an ARB front bar with lights, upgraded suspension, and 33-inch wheels/tyres. Additional features include Clear View towing mirrors and a Safari Armax snorkel – essential for those deep water crossings. The back of the wagon is well-equipped with drawers and a fridge, making it perfect for outdoor excursions.
The Custom Dyno Tuning Process
Before starting the dyno tuning, it’s crucial for our engineers to understand the vehicle’s usage and modifications. This helps us tailor the tuning process effectively.
Step 1: Pre-Tune Inspection
We begin with a thorough pre-tune inspection, which confirmed that this relatively new 200 Series with low kilometres on the clock, was in excellent condition so it was all good for custom dyno tuning. Next, we strapped the vehicle down on our all-wheel-drive dyno and performed power runs to gather baseline power and torque figures at the wheels. This step is essential for understanding the starting performance of the vehicle, as each engine is unique.
Step 2: Testing and Calibration
During the initial runs, we ensured that the engine was running smoothly without any underlying mechanical issues. Once we had the baseline data, we proceeded with the custom dyno tune. Our tuning process involves recalibrating the vehicle’s factory ECU software. Using specialized software, our engineering team modifies various engine control parameters, including torque limiting, desired torque, fuel injection maps, and boost control. Each adjustment is carefully tested using our dyno, with data-logging to monitor performance after each software revision. This iterative process allows us to achieve optimised power and torque tailored to the vehicle’s specific use.
Results and Improvements
After completing the custom dyno tune, we saw impressive results. Initially, the vehicle produced:
- 104 Kilowatts of power
- 549 Newton meters of torque at all four tyres
Post-tuning, these figures increased to:
- 136 Kilowatts of peak power
- 715 Newton meters of torque at all four tyres
This represented a remarkable gain of over 30% in both power and torque!
Enhanced Drivability
While those power and torque gains are impressive, we also prioritised how the vehicle drives during the tuning process. Due to this, the owners will notice a significant improvement in driveability when they take their 200 Series for its first “after tune” drive!
As mentioned above, we also installed one of our Trans Packs to this Cruiser, which significantly enhances the driving experience again, particularly when towing. However, even without a load, this upgrade will transform the vehicle’s overall driveability. You’ll notice smoother gear shifts, the transmission will hold top gears for longer, and it will no longer fluctuate between gears while cruising at highway speeds. The auto trans will also operate at cooler temperatures as well.
