At Ultimate Diesel Tuning, we recently had the pleasure of working on this 2012 Toyota HiLux N70 – performing an on-car chemical soot clean to it, as well as a custom dyno tune. This 12-year-old vehicle was in excellent condition with its owner looking to enhance overall driveability, as well as increased power and torque to help with towing duties. With our expertise, we aim to deliver significant improvements in these areas, particularly with the gains in torque that N70 models are known for with a custom dyno tune.
Importance of a Soot Clean
Given the vehicle’s mileage, performing an on-car chemical soot clean was essential. This process removes accumulated soot that is restrictive from the intake and upper engine components, bringing it back to a near-new condition. By clearing out this restrictive soot, we can maximise the benefits of the custom dyno tune.
Pre-Tune Inspection
Before we dive into the tuning process, we conduct a thorough pre-tune inspection on every vehicle, including this HiLux. With nearly 200,000 kilometres on the clock, it’s crucial to ensure that all components are functioning optimally. One key aspect of this inspection is checking the injectors, especially for the 1KD engines as found in the N70s. So with these vehicles, we perform an injector feedback value test as part of the pre-tune inspection to verify that the injectors are within specifications. This HiLux passed all the inspections with flying colours, allowing us to proceed with the custom dyno tune.
Vehicle Modifications and Usage
This HiLux came equipped with several modifications that contributed to extra weight, including a canopy, a bullbar, larger all-terrain tyres, and a suspension lift. It’s primarily used for touring and towing loads of around 2 tonnes. These factors are considered when custom tuning the vehicle, as our in-house Engineers tailor the tuning to its specific requirements.
Custom Dyno Tune Results
After completing the custom dyno tune, we were excited to share the results. Initially, the HiLux produced:
- 84 Kilowatts of power
- 317 Newton meters of torque at the rear tyres
Post-tuning, the numbers significantly improved:
- 103 Kilowatts of power
- 451 Newton meters of torque
The owner specifically requested enhanced driveability and increased torque, and we’re happy to report a peak torque improvement of over 40%. This will be particularly noticeable when towing the 2-tonne van. Additionally, the vehicle experienced a peak power gain of just over 24%.
