This article is Part 2 of our series with regards to various factors that impact fuel economy. In the previous article, we focused on how modifications to your vehicle can significantly affect its efficiency. In this article, we delve into the crucial role that regular maintenance plays in optimising fuel economy.
- Tyre Pressure
One of the most vital factors affecting fuel economy is tyre pressure. Maintaining the correct tyre pressure for your vehicle is essential. Underinflated tyres can lead to a marked increase in fuel consumption. For example, one of our staff members conducted a test with a tyre pressure difference of just 10 psi over a distance of 400 kilometres. The result? A 2-litre increase in fuel consumption, due solely to underinflation. Checking your tyre pressure is easy and free – just visit your local petrol station to ensure your tyres are properly inflated!
- Restrictive “diesel soot”
Another important maintenance aspect is managing diesel soot, especially for vehicles that have travelled over 50,000klms (or even less). For example, below is “soot” from the engine of a 79 Series LandCruiser that had travelled around 100,000 kilometres. As you can see, this is significant build-up that had accumulated in the intake system. This build-up restricts airflow and not only diminishes engine power but can also adversely affect fuel economy.
To combat this, it’s crucial to clean the intake and upper valvetrain of your vehicle. A clean intake will help maximise your fuel efficiency by ensuring unobstructed airflow!

- Sensors & Air Flow Meters
Next, let’s discuss the importance of clean map sensors and airflow meters. These components measure critical metrics that affect combustion efficiency. If they are dirty, your engine won’t achieve optimal combustion, resulting in poorer fuel economy. Regular cleaning of these sensors is essential for maintaining peak performance.
- Fuel Injectors
In common-rail diesel engines, fuel injectors are often referred to as the heart of the system. Ensuring that your fuel injectors are in good condition is crucial for fuel efficiency. If your vehicle has accumulated significant mileage, consider having the injectors checked or replaced. New injectors can lead to noticeable improvements in fuel economy.
- Filters
Lastly, keeping your air filters and fuel filters clean is essential for vehicle efficiency. Dirty filters can hinder airflow and fuel delivery, negatively impacting engine performance and fuel consumption.
Conclusion
From tyre pressure to air and fuel filter maintenance, each aspect plays a vital role in your vehicle’s fuel economy. By prioritising regular maintenance, you can ensure your vehicle operates at its most efficient, saving you money at the pump while contributing to a healthier environment. Keep your vehicle in top shape to enjoy optimal fuel efficiency!
