The 3rd Generation D-Max was released to Australia in around August 2020 with quite a few changes from the 2nd Gen. One major change is a new engine! The previous 4JJ1 engine was renowned for its durability, reliability & performance all in one. Isuzu has gone one better again & developed the next generation 4J engine, called the 4JJ3-TCX. It’s found in all the 3rd Gen D-Maxes. They are still a 4-cyolinder, single turbo, 3-litre engine, but there are some noticeable differences plus increases in power. The engine block has been strengthened, there is a revised crankshaft, new lightweight alloy pistons and an alloy cylinder head. As well as changes to the fuel injection system including a much higher output fuel pump, and the intake is now forward-facing, which is much better for airflow. Plus the turbocharger has had some improvements as well. This means that these 4JJ3 engines have better response & less turbo lag over the 4JJ1s, as peak torque now comes in a lot earlier & the range is a lot wider. Body-wise, it’s also an improvement over the previous models with a more aggressive silhouette, it is also stronger, the ride is much more comfortable, with refined interiors that are impressive. Like the 4JJ1 engines, the 4JJ3s also respond very well to modifications & tuning.
